Aug 19th: A bonus trip (Herian’s Ground Sloth)

August 19, 2007

5 miles driven (returning car) , 21 photographs taken, 1 Americano Grandes drunk , 0 Starbucks City Mugs acquired

Accomodation: AA136 (first class in a 777 so should be good, written in anticipation)

Picture: This is the fossilized skeleton of Harian’s Ground Sloth, recovered from the La Brea Tar Pits in the centre of Los Angeles. There were an amazing number of well preserved skeletons including one wall with 404 Dire Wolf skulls (out of 1600 recovered in total). Outside the museum door itself you see a tar pit, with a fairly realistic mammoth sinking to its death observed by mate and child …..

Well today was a good day. Thanks to Norene Gilbert of American Airlines we were moved from an economy flight to New York, followed by a first class flight to London(well one has to use up the miles), to a first class direct flight to London. That meant leaving at 1805 rather than 1100 so we had a bonus day. Norene (may her name be sung with great praise in the annals of outstanding service) also suggested that we use the time by visiting the La Brea Tar Pits which was an outstanding suggestion. We also took in the Petersen Automotive Museum and had brunch in Callender’s which has real character. OK, so I left my camera in the taxi, but this was one of those days where little can go wrong ( mind you we have not got on the flight yet so I am touching wood); the LAX dispatch clark had give us a slip with the Taxi number , so a phone call and a $30 tip meant that the Olympus 8 megapixel and I were reunited after a short separation.

Mixing a Pliocene Tar Pit and icons of the Petroleum industry within a few hours (and yards) of each other was a contrast. I can strongly recommend both. Now to work, I have an article to finish, a concluding blog for the trip and all those people who have been tolerant of my absence for the past 17 days probably want answers to their emails. So its Gin and Tonics, a bad film and in seat power …..
