Don’t trust the soup

February 14, 2009

Aiden and Sonja over at Narrative Labs have just completed a narrative project on mine safety. I had the pleasure of looking over the report before it went in to the client and found the material interesting. A lot of the best work on archetypes has been done in South Africa over the years and this is another great example. You can read the details here and see the problem mapping onto the Cynefin domains and proposed solutions. Its a nice example of a small consultancy of Cynefin practitioners supporting a larger consultancy group. I think we will see more of that over time as people start to realise that a network of capability is a more powerful service model than the factory models of ownership that have characterised the larger consultancy firms in recent years.

Here is their main conclusion and it has general applicability: Based on our research we have identified that many safety initiatives are focused on the Simple and Complicated domains and many of the unsolved problems are found in the Complex domain. You will have to read the report to understand the title of this post!
