Dave Snowden and The Cynefin Co have developed a series of complex methods and practices, as well as an approach to assembling those methods and tools into context-sensitive process designs and outputs using hexagons. We are the originators of a body of tools and techniques used with groups to work with complex and complicated issues, falling broadly under the umbrella of complex facilitation... However, we also acknowledge that this is a broad field with many actors. As part of a broader open approach, our hexi kits will be open to others collaborating in a multi-method, multi-vendor approach.
In 2022, The Cynefin Co launched a core facilitation kit and approach with its own brand and identity, but also opened this process up to other partners and organisations to define their own methods and tool sets and create their own Hexi “extension kits”, permitting a multi-vendor approach to scaling complex approaches.
In our initial launch, we are making available:
• The Cynefin Co Hexi Basekit – our core methods and approaches
• The Estuarine Mapping kit, previous version was The EU Field Guide Hexi kit – containing all of the methods and tools set out in the Field Guide
• A Hexi Bundle containing both The Cynefin Co BaseKit and the Estuarine Mapping Kit
• All with optional training support
These Hexi kits are designed to facilitate groups in workshops, planning, or strategy sessions, encouraging new approaches to untangling and addressing challenging problems, as well as decomposing and recombining methods.
In any contextual setting, the Hexi cards can be used to physically connect elements and methods into unique, context-specific solutions. Each Hexi features explanatory text and a link to our open-source wiki, which includes the method steps, a history of its development, and practitioner tips.
Over many years of working with a broad spectrum of clients, we have refined these tools and techniques and distilled them into distinct themes and categories that form the basis of these kits.
Perfect for use with groups in workshops, planning or strategy sessions to unpick and plan for how to approach sticky problems. Take the task at hand as the contextual setting and then use the hexagon cards to physically connect elements to create unique combinations of methods as solutions for your problem.
The Estuarine Mapping Hexi builds upon and is the natural succession from the EU Field Guide for Managing Complexity (and Chaos) in Times of Crisis kit and – our joint publication with the EU Commission’s Joint Research Centre – which offers an integration of our methods and body of work, using Cynefin as a lens for managing and navigating in complexity and crisis.
This bundle features the newest facilitation tools from The Cynefin Co., including The BaseKit (V2) and the Estuarine Mapping Kit. It is perfect for facilitators, consultants, and leaders in strategy and community working within complex and evolving environments.
As Hexi's product line expands and new partners join, we will update this section to share information on upcoming kits. These kits will either be available for pre-order or in the registration of interest stage. This Hexi pack offers the various elements of the SCRUM and Agile processes, broken down to a useful level of granularity. This allows your team to decompose existing Agile processes and frameworks and create their multi-method solutions for innovation.
