Living with uncertainty

July 15, 2010

Two similar quotes from contrasting sources which capture (in very different ways) the essence of dealing with uncertinaty:

“The key is being scrappy. It’s the guys that they see an idea and they don’t know how they’re going do it but they’re going to try everything and just fight and claw and keep adapting, keep trying things.”

Nick Swinmum founder Zappos & Dethrone

“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”

St Paul 1 Corinthians 13:12

Both indicate the real nature of vision, which is not about an assembly of platitudes, but is all about that sense that you are heading in the right direction coupled with a willingness to tolerate failure and live with experimentation.

About the Cynefin Company

The Cynefin Company (formerly known as Cognitive Edge) was founded in 2005 by Dave Snowden. We believe in praxis and focus on building methods, tools and capability that apply the wisdom from Complex Adaptive Systems theory and other scientific disciplines in social systems. We are the world leader in developing management approaches (in society, government and industry) that empower organisations to absorb uncertainty, detect weak signals to enable sense-making in complex systems, act on the rich data, create resilience and, ultimately, thrive in a complex world.
