We work with a distributed network of members in a range of countries and contexts. Although not exhaustive, the following list highlights our current areas of interest in which The Cynefin Company team and members are currently building programmes, and accepting new memberships. In addition to these specific programmes, we have also worked extensively within agriculture, organisational and employment studies, international development, Agile, knowledge management, strategy, sport and music.
Cynefin® Knowledge Management Programme
Build more resilient knowledge ecosystems and sense-making capabilities for better decision-making, innovation and employee engagement. Our programme is designed to start a KM programme and to re-energise existing knowledge management programmes, respecting what has already been done, as well as being suitable for greenfield sites.
The Citizen Engagement & Democratic Innovation programme provides tools for collective sense-making in the areas of community development and youth work, civic engagement and democratic innovation, collaborative service/policy design and evaluation, housing/tenant engagement, futures and planning, shared learning and peer-to-peer knowledge exchange.
Never has the need to take a complexity-informed approach to healthcare been more apparent; one that puts lived experience and context at the centre of a logic of care.
Our education programme is still a fledgeling in its structured form. Still, it draws from years of experience and multiple countries and institutions applying SenseMaker to learning, students, and life in educational institutions and it is growing through application and experience.
In 2019, in response to a growing sense of paralysis caused by the enormity of the problem of climate change, we launched an open-source study looking at small actions that might make a difference and restore a sense of agency. From that small beginning, we are growing an entire program, looking at climate change and people’s responses to it at the human level.
Despite our best efforts at union, we live in a world of division. A world where competing political rhetoric causes anger and conflict; where ideological differences lead to privilege, poverty, and discriminative stereotypes, and where mass media is powered by sensationalism and severance to sell. A world of power, discrimination, and conflict. But as human beings, through our very nature of being, we have more that brings us together than sets us apart.
Religions and spiritual beliefs provide stories, structures and practices that provide participants with a lens and a pathway for making sense of, and acting, in the world.
The Cynefin Company (formerly known as Cognitive Edge) was founded in 2005 by Dave Snowden. We believe in praxis and focus on building methods, tools and capability that apply the wisdom from Complex Adaptive Systems theory and other scientific disciplines in social systems. We are the world leader in developing management approaches (in society, government and industry) that empower organisations to absorb uncertainty, detect weak signals to enable sense-making in complex systems, act on the rich data, create resilience and, ultimately, thrive in a complex world.
