State barbarism

I have always opposed the death penalty seeing no evidence that it defers and much evidence that it dehumanises all involved. One of Tom Hank’s better films was Dead Man Walking, and there have been others on the subject. The rituals around the process are degrading and inhuman but I had not realised, until I read this BBC report that in Japan the victim is not told the date of execution until just before they are taken the Gallows, and their relatives are told after the event.
