Web 2.0 Podcast

October 25, 2007

Earlier this month Jon Husband of Wirearchy interviewed me on a range of issues around social computing and knowledge management. He sent me a copy with permission to load it and with the kind comment that I have had several people say your responses are really clear, great thinking, very interesting, etc. This may or may not be true, but to make your own mind up the podcast is here, and Jon’s outline questions are set out below.

Questions for Dave Snowden Interview

Preamble on Web 2.0 (definition ?) For example, compnents include: Constant flows of information, hyperlinks, participation, interaction, social construction of knowledge, give and take, two-way flows, mass narrative and so on

  1. What, in your opinion, is the best definition of Web 2.0 /Enterprise 2.0 with respect to the redefinition and redesign of knowledge work and the impact on “managing” knowledge, or the socialconstruction of knowledge in service to organizational objectives andeffectiveness ?
  2. It has been suggested that the implementation and use of Web 2.0 capabilities will gradually redefine the nature of knowledge work and the use of information to construct knowledge. Do you agree, and if so, what do you think will be the impact on the principles of organizational structure ?
  3. Prior to the advent of Web 2.0, KM experts often suggested that an audit of an enterprise’s knowledge assets was an important first step in preparing for / planning a KM programme. Assuming an enterprise decides to implement and use Web 2.0 capabilities, do you think that such an audit is still necessary or useful, or not ? If so, why and how would the potential use of Web 2.0 capabilities change the scope, reach and objectives of such an audit ?
  4. In a Web 2.0 environment, do you think large and highly structured document storage and retrieval systems will still be useful, or essential, to “managing” knowledge for an enterprise ? If so, whay and how. If not, why not and how will their previous utility be replaced ?
  5. Re: the use of tags – can they be used effectively to help “manage” and construct knowledge
  6. What do you think about the differences between structured taxonomies (for domains / bodies of knowledge) and “folksonomies” (user-generated tags applied to issues / subjects areas of knowledge)? Are the two adversarial, or can they be seen and used as complementary in the pursuit of creating knowledge from flows of information ?
  7. What else can you offer as insights about the impact of Web 2.0 on the area of professional activity known as Knowledge Management ?
