Why oh why let Tom Cruise loose on history?

April 25, 2009

I planned to spend most of the flight to Washington today working, which I did. However two things disturbed me. Firstly I got very indignant at the film Valkyrie supposedly telling the story of the 20th July plot against Hitler in 1944. Now I have no great liking for Tom Cruise in the first place, but this is a truly appalling film. Cruise’s character Claus von Stauffenberg was an important part of the plot, but not the all singing and dancing, do everything, only truly noble person around crap that is portrayed in the film. If you want a great narrative of the event then read Hans Hellmut Kirst’s The 20th of July which at least attempts historical accuracy. His Gunner Asch novels are also outstanding if you haven’t read them. The second interruption was the admiration the 17″MacBook Pro attracted from other passengers and stewardesses all wanting a closer look.
